Celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring by joining us at the Cayuga Nature Center for the return of the Maple Fest! This year the festival is back better then ever with new activities and fun for the whole family. On Saturday, March 12, from 10-4, our lodge will be filled with the sweet smells of maple candies and the sounds of lively music.
The tapping of maple trees, some as old as the area itself, has been a tradition from the days of Indian culture. Through the years, maple syrup production has provided income for area farmers, and has grown with the times and the increasing technology.
Have you been to the Nature Center when the ground is frozen and there is snow all around you? If you haven’t come out for our snow shoeing hikes or taken advantage of one of our many winter workshops, this is your chance to explore the wonders of nature in winter. On special display at this year’s Maple Fest will be the work created by the students in the Cayuga Frontier Explorers program. For the February school break, students will be role-playing life as a pioneer from the 1790s and learn how to provide for themselves and their families from the land. They will map our homestead site, learn how to build a campfire in the snow, cook in the style of the times, and keep a daily journal in character. All of their projects will be on display in the lodge and several of the students will be acting as tour guides for the homestead site during the Maple Fest.
How do we put together a festival of this size? With lots of help from people like you! To make the Maple Fest possible, the combined efforts of some 200 people, many organizations, public bodies, and the schools are essential. It is truly a joint effort which has made the entire concept a "fun project" to work on. Preperation starts weeks ahead of the event, and volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the festival. If you or your group are interested in getting involved, please call us at (607) 273-6260. Volunteer hours for this event count as community service hours and make great scout badges.
Admission is good all day, so come early and enjoy a pancake brunch, music, tree tapping demos, sugar on snow, games for kids, local syrup producers, bird box building, and local vendors. Come back later in the evening, on your same ticket, and join us for a wonderful celebration! This celebration will include...oops, it’s a secret! You’ll just have to attend to find out what special group is performing that night.
Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for kids. Discounted tickets are available through our online reservation form CNC members may use their free admission tickets, included in every membership packet, for this event.
