Internship Outline of Expectations

Cayuga Nature Center (CNC), in coordination with the intern's school, will arrange internships for 12-30 weeks based on the program requirements. The overall internship, including evaluations, will be supervised by Ali Higgins with additional supervision by departmental staff.

All students who wish to pursue an internship at CNC need to submit a complete resume and cover letter stating the intended department they wish to work and the length and start date of the internship. If the school provides written internship criteria, this should be submitted as well.

Training and Instruction:

All interns will receive training and instruction in the following areas with the majority of their time spent on the area of their choice:

Gift shop/admissions
Supervising youth volunteers
Membership operations
Program scheduling, contracting and billing
Teaching programs
Marketing
Live animal care and handling
Trail and building maintenance
Grant writing and application

Meeting Attendance:

Interns are expected to attend the following meetings:

Staff Meeting – held twice monthly, expected to attend all meetings
Board Meeting – held once monthly, expected to attend at least once
Human Resource Services – held once monthly, expected to attend at least once
Discovery Trail Education and PR – held once monthly, expected to attend at least once
At least two additional community functions as representative of CNC

Project Responsibilities:

Interns will be responsible for assisting in the following projects:

Program evaluations
Writing one article for the next newsletter
Creating and recording at least one radio PSA
Arranging and leading a special population program
Designing and distributing at least one mailing for program advertisement
Create at minimum one instructive brochure or pamphlet
Create at minimum one interactive educational display

Responsibility for a major project:

Interns will be primarily responsible for one major project; this may be chosen from the list below or designed by the student:

Organizing and implementing an annual special event (Halloween Capers, Maple Fest, Butterfly House)
Summer Camp Bobcat Program (Counselor in Training)
Grant research and application – various projects
Website design and maintenance – new pages
Interactive educational displays – creation and construction
Compost/waste program representative
Develop new educational programming for a specific sector of the public (seniors, handicapped, ESL, etc)

Professionalism:

Interns will be treated at a professional level at CNC and are expected to adhere to all CNC employee rules and regulations to be outlined at the start of the internship. Interns at CNC are required to make their own housing and transportation arrangements. No additional stipends or reimbursements without prior approval by the staff supervisor are offered or implied. Some interns may be hired part-time at the end of their internship.
