Compost Products

All of Cayuga Nature Center Compost products are the result of large “Turned Windrow” style composting. Incoming Food scraps, Wood chips, Farm by-products, and Granite Dust are blended on our mixing pad.

Curing Piles

The compost blend is then transferred to the composting area where long mounds or “Windrows” are formed. As decomposition begins the contents of the Windrow will begin heating up. Temperatures of between 130 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit will be reached in several days. Material stays in this area and is frequently turned over on itself using a front loader machine. This aids in breaking down larger sized particles as well as insuring plenty of oxygen exists during the decomposition process.

Curing Piles

Material remain here for six to eight months, or until temperatures drop below 100 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the windrow. Larger ”Curing” piles are then built where continued aging and decomposition occurs for an additional four to six months. Finished compost is screened, removing contamination and course sized material. Finished products are then stored inside Cayuga Nature Center's Compost Building.
