Perhaps the snows have melted already in Tompkins County, but the season of Thaw and Flood, a chapbook anthology of poetry and prose in honor of the Cayuga Nature Center's 25th anniversary, has just begun. Writers, from award-winning poets to grandparents, from middle-school students to MFA candidates, have contributed to make this book as diverse and beautiful as our natural landscape.

A reading and reception for the community with the authors of Thaw and Flood will be held at the new Tompkins County Public Library, in the Borg-Warner community room, on May 20, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM. Authors including Deborah Tall (winner of the 1999 Kathryn A. Morton Prize in Poetry), Emily Rhoads Johnson, Katharyn Howd Machan, and Tony Ingraham will be reading their work, with a reception to follow.

Photography for the chapbook was provided by Nathan Mallison, a local photographer and Alternative Community School student. The original photographs used for the chapbook and other photography by Nathan will be on display at the reading; his work will appear in a one-man show at the Cayuga Nature Center through the summer.

Thaw and Flood has been funded by the Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts and the Cayuga Nature Center. Copies will be available for $5.00 at the reading, at local bookstores, and at the Cayuga Nature Center. For additional information, please call Adam Smith at 256-8804.
